title: Settings
description: Update docs branding, navigation links, assistant settings, and site options from the dashboard.
---

Use dashboard settings when you want to configure your docs without editing
`docs.json`.

## What settings control

Dashboard settings cover global docs behavior and presentation, including site
title, branding, logos, navbar links, footer links, assistant options, and other
site-level defaults.

These settings are different from page content. Page content lives in MDX files;
site settings control how the whole docs site behaves.

## Dashboard and docs.json

Most settings map to values in `docs.json`. You can use the dashboard for
no-code configuration, or edit `docs.json` directly when working locally or in
source mode.

Use the dashboard path when you want guided controls. Use
[Configure with docs.json](/configure-with-docs-json/overview) when you want the
file-based reference.

## Publish settings changes

Settings changes are published the same way page changes are published. When the
draft is ready, click **Publish** and watch the deployment from Overview.
